One of the most important reasons this isn't just a rename is the shift in how we treat the developer’s mental energy. The original DevOps mantra was "you build it, you run it," which sounded great but often resulted in developers becoming overwhelmed by Kubernetes, security, and cloud networking. I see Platform Engineering as a necessary "course correction" to reduce this cognitive load. Instead of making every developer an infrastructure expert, the platform team builds a layer that hides the complex plumbing. This perspective focuses on the human element—protecting the developer's ability to focus on code. Transitioning to this model means the platform team takes on the "heavy lifting" so the feature teams don't have to. I strongly feel that this is a fundamental shift in philosophy. It acknowledges that human brainpower is a finite resource that must be managed carefully. By providing a curated set of tools, Platform Engineering allows developers to be productive without needing to master the entire technical stack. It is about making the right thing to do the easiest thing to do, which is a much more sustainable way to work.
