My recommendation

For your daily DevOps/SRE work, use Installer Edition on your own Windows machine. It is cleaner for regular use, shortcuts, updates, file associations, and long-term management.

Use Portable Edition when:

You do not have admin rights, you are using a temporary/client machine, you want to keep multiple versions, or you want to carry your sessions/settings in one folder/USB.

Important note

Portable does not mean “more secure.” If you store SSH sessions, passwords, private keys, or master password data inside it, protect that folder carefully. Portable tools are easy to copy — good for convenience, risky if the folder is stolen.

For your personal laptop/PC: Installer Edition.
For office/client/restricted machine: Portable Edition.
